The Ibanez Super 70 pickup was made in the 1970s, and was installed in many of that company's guitars, including their "Rocket Roll" flying V-shaped guitar, and their Gibson Explorer-shaped "Destroyer". The Super 70 is sometimes thought to be a clone of a Gibson PAF, or of a Dimarzio Super Distortion, but it actually bore little similarity to either of those pickups. It had an Alnico 8 magnet (not an Alnico 5 or a ceramic magnet), which was approximately 33% taller than a standard Gibson humbucker bar magnet. It had not one, but two over-sized spacers to keep its somewhat under-wound bobbins level. And the wire was not the stuff found on most pickup offerings these days. And the tone! Although somewhat underwound, the Super 70 had a somewhat high output due to its magnet's strength. The magnet also contributed to what some would call a "scooped mids" tone; a tone found in some of the most scorching rhythm and lead guitar tracks of the late 70s and early 80s, including several heard on Van Halen's first album. ToneSlinger's Superb 70 is a replica of an actual, 1977 Ibanez Super 70 pickup. We took an original one apart, measured its physical and electrical qualities and quantities, and reverse engineered it. We custom-ordered Alnico 8 bars matching the dimensions and grinding of the original magnets. We make right-sized spacers in-house. We ordered custom magnet wire. Like the Super 70, the Superb 70 is available with chrome-plated or gold-plated covers, but we've also made nickel-plated and "aged" (treated raw nickel-silver) covers available as an option. The result? A tone clone of the original, available new, today.
